Pop Rock Music in the 70's - 80's in TURKEY Due to the structure of the new libertarian constitution , Turkish people learned about foreign rock bands quicker. After that , writers rearranged the old songs and composed new songs with the same principles of rock bands. Youth and mass movements of that time affected Turkey at the same time with the West , so musicians composed new songs with slogans in them and on the 12th September , 1980 everything changed. The 1980’s can be considered to be the worst years for rock music. Following changes in politics, After the coup in 1980 , musicians who made political songs ran abroad , some musicians were banned. As the government forced musicians to stop making songs with political slogans in it , arabesque and other popular musics came forward in the 1980s. The most known musicians of that time are Erkin Koray , Barış Manço , Cem Karaca etc.

Cem KaracaTurkish rock pioneer Cem Karaca was born April 5, 1945. He first performed in a cover band called "the Dynamites," followed an Elvis Presley tribute group called "the Jaguars"; and from there Karaca eventually began writing his own original songs, honing a massively influential style that combined traditional Anatolian lyrics with cutting-edge contemporary rock melodies. With his trademark felt hat, large glasses, and long hair, by the dawn of the 1970s Karaca was not only Turkey's biggest pop star, but he was also a countercultural icon -- his songs were intensely political, fusing patriotic zeal with leftist ideologies that harshly criticized Turkey's growing right-wing sect.As Turkey's political unrest escalated, so did the polemical force of Karaca's music -- finally, in 1978, he fled to West Germany in the face of mounting legal pressures and assassination fears. Finally, he was given amnesty in 1987.

Sezen Aksu
Sezen Aksu was born in Izmir in 1955, and took lessons in Turkish classical music in 1973 from Rüştü Şardağ. She entered the world of professional music with her first recorded song, “Haydi Şansım” (Just my luck), which she sang on a 1975 New Year’s television program. Now considered the diva of pop music in Turkey, Aksu is known as a popular songwriter as well. “Firuze” is one of her most loved songs.In the 1980s, Aksu and Onno Tunc (a producer) put their signatures to works that broke new ground in Turkish pop music,such as "Sen Aglama" (Don't Cry),and "Go" (Leave). Her music matured in the 90s.She also began to produce albums for her vocalists as Askin Nur Yengi and Sertab Erener.
